The National Cooperative Museum was opened on 2 July 2004 on the occasion of the 82nd International Cooperative Day.

 

       It was created at the initiative of the management of the Central Cooperative Union. Most of the exhibits are provided by the cooperative unions and cooperatives and the selection of the exhibition materials, their preparation and arrangement was carried out by the employees of the Cooperative Policy Department at the CCU.

 

      

          There are window displays with exhibits and documents on:

  • the periods in the development of the Bulgarian cooperatives;
  • the establishment of CCU;
  • the youth cooperative movement;
  • foreign trade activities of CCU;
  • educational and cultural activities;
  • the international cooperative movement; international cooperation and the participation of representatives of the Bulgarian cooperatives in the management bodies of the International Cooperative Alliance.
         The origination and development of the cooperative movement in each region in the country is presented in special museum displays. Abundant exhibits are shown in the displays of RCU Plovdiv, DCU and CCU Sofia, RCU Bourgas, RCU Karnobat, DCU Vidin, CU Pleven, CU Veliko Tarnovo, etc.
         The museum is visited by the cooperative members, cooperative leaders, presidents of cooperatives and cooperative unions as well as Bulgarian statesmen and representatives of international cooperative organisations, such as: Georgi Parvanov, President of the Republic of Bulgaria; Angel Marin, Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria; Ivano Barberini, President of the International Cooperative Alliance; Anne Santamaki, President of EURO COOP; Lars Hillbom, former President of ICA – Europe and Vice President of ICA, etc.
         In 2006 during the celebration of the 84th International Cooperative Day the President of the Republic of Bulgaria – Mr. Georgi Parvanov opened the monument – bas-relief of the founders of the cooperative movement in Bulgaria – Todor Vlaykov and Todor Yonchev. He visited the National Cooperative Museum and wrote in the book of the Museum:
„With respect to the over century – long large-scale operations of the cooperative movement in Bulgaria, with respect to all that the CCU is doing today, keeping and developing the good traditions!”.
